and completely without warning.....

BFP at first beta on 9/26/14!! beta-272, progesterone-159. next beta test will be next tuesday, crossing my fingers for doubling, tripling, whatever!!! (at some point i will fill in all the details between the last blog post and this one :) just had to get the numbers down for posterity!!

acronym stew!

i'm hoping my actual friends and family will read this one day, so i suppose i should explain all these acronyms we inseminating ladies throw about. yes, they make every post cheesy, but they also makes everything easier. here we go....

AF: aunt flo. on the rag. the witch. i think you get it....

AI: alternative insemination.

BBT: basal body temperature. this involves taking your temperature RIGHT after you wake up, before you get up or even speak or move around too much. once your BBT goes up and stays up (compared to all your other daily BBTs you've recorded in the weeks previous), then you know you've ovulated. this makes temperature a good confirmation of ovulation but not usable as a predictor.

BFN: big fat negative (on a pregnancy test)

BFP: big fat positive

CD: cycle day. example--"CD14", meaning the 14th day of your monthly menstrual cycle. CD1 is always the first day of your period.

CM: cervical mucous.

DP: dear partner.

DS: donor sperm. (or dear son, but i don't have one so you'll never read that in here).

DW: dear wife.

EWCM: egg-white cervical mucous. you can probably guess what it resembles based on its name....this is the most fertile kind, and when you get it you pretty much know you're ovulating or close to it.

FMU: first morning urine. said to not be as useful for ovulation predictor kits, because the hormone being tested for doesn't build up in your system until later in the day. however, the kits i happen to use (clear blue easy) say it's fine and i've often gotten positives with FMU.

ICI: intra-cervical insemination.

IUI: intra-uterine insemination (most often done with a professional's help).

IVI: intra-vaginal insemination (most often done at home).

KD: known donor

LH: luteinizing hormone. this is what signals your ovaries to let the ovum out, and is detected in ovulation predictor kits.

O: ovulate or ovulation. as in, 'today was my O day!'

OPK: ovulation prediction kit, taken to tell you if and when you are about to ovulate. these are also called 'smileys' because one brand has a digital smiley face pop up on its screen when it's positive.

POAS: pee on a stick. for ovulation predictor kits and pregnancy tests.

RE: reproductive endocrinologist. when you're starting to realize you might need some help with all of this....

"swimmies" or "swim team": nickname for the vial of sperm.

TTC: trying to conceive.

TWW: two week wait. the time period between insemination and when your period might come/you can take a pregnancy test with a reasonable expectation of getting an accurate answer.
